Recruitment dialog[edit | edit source]
Face: You were hiding from something?
Recruit: I have been staying low for a decade. I'm a high-ranking deserter, and if UltraTek got a wiff of my scent, they'd be looking for me and the others who deserted with me.
CK: You managed to desert with others and they didn't hunt you back then?
Recruit: We picked our moment to desert well - I don't know where you were in 2220, but this city was on fire with the siege of Knight Horizon megacorp. My special ops unit was one of the first to go in. It was hell. What started as a raid turned into an all out war for 6 days. In the end, there were four of us left and we deserted together. In the complete mess of the siege, we were written off as MIA or dead with the rest of our fireteam.
Face: So, you were there when the megacorps took Knight Horizon down?
Recruit: Our part - and the utter destruction of my team - was all played out by the end of the first night. We didn't stick around for the executions, the looting and the vultures carving up Knight Horizon's corpse. When the Global Corporate Court revoked their corporate mandate, it was open season. No laws protected them or their citizens and the other megacorps took no mercy.
CK: The GCC kept the report on Knight Horizon confidential and never released the cause for revoking their mandate.
Face: But the rumors say that an Artificial Consciousness - one of the original 7 - had infiltrated the megacorp.
Recruit: They never told us grunts on the ground either. We just died for their confidential orders. I heard it said that there was an AC controlling one of the primary shareholders like a puppet.
Face: A lot of rumors pointed back to the harbor island A12.
Recruit: Right, I've heard those too - that they were doing experiments embedding the embers of one of the Artificial Conscious into humans out on that island.
CK: Or maybe it was simpler - Brave Star and some of the other rivals falsified evidence as an excuse to wipe Knight Horizon out.
Recruit: We will probably never know but ... It was real. Whatever the threat was, it was real. The megacorps went in on full war footing and Knight Horizon met us at their territory line, ready to fight to the death.
CK: So you're back from the dead, back from a long retirement and looking for a crew. What makes you worth picking up?
Make your choice and continue:
- In my time with the fireteam, I've saw hell in its many forms. I'm Calm in the face of whatever may come now. (+1 Will, Ignore up to 1 Recoil and +3% Stress Res)
- My place in the fireteam was long range support. If its far away, I'll take that Longshot and I'll bullseye it any day. (+1 Tech, -3% Close-Quarters Accuracy (Shotgun/E-Rifle/UAR) and +3% Long Range Accuracy (Sniper/Railgun))
- I was always ranging out, scouting and spying on someone before my fireteam came in hot - a Sleuth has to spot every clue. (+1 Will and +3% Legwork Success)
Recruit: My place in the fireteam was long range support. If its far away, I'll take that Longshot and I'll bullseye it any day. I like to keep my enemies far away or dead, or even better - both.
CK: In our line of work, that can be the difference between a score and a disaster. What do you think, <face>?
Face: I've got one more question - you said there were other deserters from UltraTek and that you all knew each other.
Recruit: There were 4 of us survivors from Fireteam Shadow Wolf when we split our separate ways. We knew if we deserted together, our odds of staying out of sight were way worse. We lost one of our number to the years, an another headed west to the San Francisco Radiation Zone.
CK: So one of the other survivors is still in New Boston
Make your choice and continue:
- Raven and I used to have something but not anymore. She runs a Gun Runner network focused on long-range weaponry.
- Kelsen took a stint as a freelance Head Hunter but has settled into the lucrative gig of cooking designer Combat Drugs now.
- Ryka was our technical breacher, taking out enemy security and drones. He's made a place for himself on the matrix as a Netwraith.
Recruit: Kelsen took a stint as a freelance Head Hunter but has settled into the lucrative gig of cooking designer Combat Drugs now.
Face: Having a friend with connections in the Head Hunter community might prove useful.
Recruit: And Kelsen knows his way around pharmies, trust me. The fireteam never went on a mission without everyone taking their cocktail.
CK: In that line of business, it doesn't hurt to have real life combat experience. Otherwise, you're just guessing. A private word, <face>?
