Recruitment Dialog[edit | edit source]
B-Tuna: I think you should meet Roman. We've been working together for a while, but he is more suited for a small team than what I'm running here.
Blur: Before we meet, give us more than that, B-Tuna. What do you mean?
B-Tuna: Roman is a lone wolf, a bit hard to understand at times. No question, he is highly trained, knows his biz and is very deadly. But he grated on my people.
Oni: We have some lone wolves here. Thank you for that let's do this introduction.
Roman: I have been hoping to meet a Cyber Knight ever since I ditched UltraTek. This feels right.
Oni: So, B-Tuna tells us you used to work in a weapons lab at UltraTek?
Roman: I passed my aptitude tests to secure UltraTek citizenship and by that I mean I bribed my way through like everyone does. It turns out my aptitudes leaned toward weapons close in and personal melee. If UltraTek participated in something like the UKF, I probably would have been farmed out to their team.
Oni: Then you wouldn't be the only one we have an ex Ultimate Kill Fight competitor on the team. You'd be in good company here.
Roman: Among my own kind, perhaps. That would be nice. But they didn't have a team so I ended up in a research lab. I was trained as an evaluator and a fabricator.
Blur: So you got to play with all the latest prototypes?
Roman: Yes but only against test dummies and drones. It's dry work.
Blur: As in, no blood?
Roman: I meant it is boring. I'm talented, I didn't want to rot in a lab.
Blur: So you were bored enough to walk from a megacorporate citizenship?
Roman: If you have to pass aptitude tests to get your citizen card, you aren't a big honcho citizen. My family afforded the bribes to get me through, but that was it. Now, if you're some boujo corp kid with actual stock shares coming your way from your parents, now that is a different story. I was bored and I could see my future, growing old and slow in that sterile lab. That's it - I walked. I went looking for something to make me feel alive. I found B-Tuna but ... I still want something more.
Oni: You're bringing a unique skill set down to the streets, Roman. What makes you worth hiring on?
Further define this merc by picking one of the following Traits:
- You hire a blade for what the blade can do. I am a Cold Killer and I will kill for you. (+1 Will and +5% Crit Chance)
- You don't work in a lab like that without learning a lot of Mega Fab secrets. If you're running a ghetto Fab down here, I can help. (+1 Strength, +8% Kinetic Dmg, +2% XP Gained and 6% price reduction for NanoFab crafting for Weapons or Weapon Mods)
- My training and bio-regimen at UltraTek were rigorous - when it comes to a fight, I am Bull-Built and am going to power through no matter what happens. (+2 Strength and +30 Hit Points)
Roman: My training and bio-regimen at UltraTek were rigorous when it comes to a fight, I am Bull-Built and am going to power through no matter what happens. If you're bringing a sword to the fight, you need to be able to take lethal hits and keep hitting back.
Oni: In our line of work, we need exactly those kind of skills to stay one step ahead. What do you think, Blur?
Blur: I've got one more question - I know you said you just walked away like it didn't matter, but megacorps don't just let people go.
Onl: If you want us to take you seriously, tell us the entire story.
Roman: I like the both of you because I want to work for someone with a sharp eye. You don't miss a beat. B-Tuna never pressed me on it, but I'm willing to tell you.
Oni: That's good because, let me be clear -- if you want in this company, trust is our baseline. So, even if you don't like your own answer, it better be the truth.
Further define this merc's Backstory by picking one of the following complications:
- When I left UltraTek, I tried to get recruited by Rook Technologies. That did not go well and I ended up killing my handler and a few of their goons.
- On my way out, I took a chance to gut one of my superiors I hated. I never liked him and it was a nice way to say goodbye. UltraTek hasn't forgiven me yet.
- When I first got on the loose, I had a nasty run in with Brave Star that left one of their street captain's dead. They're still looking for me.
Roman: On my way out, I took a chance to gut one of my superiors I hated. I never liked him and it was a nice way to say goodbye. UltraTek hasn't forgiven me yet.
Blur: That was an unforced error.
Roman: I had worked there too long and I needed to say goodbye... in a way.
Oni: That is very strange way to describe a bloody mess you made for yourself. And now we have to decide if we are willing to step into it. A private word, Blur? What do you think?
Blur: This one has his oddities cold, calculating, clearly a killer deep down inside. Might be perfect for our team.
