The Escaped Experiment is a potential recruit for the mercenary squad.
Backstory[edit | edit source]
What you remember is a haze - but you know that you and your son were citizens of Rook Technologies. You know your own megacorp kidnapped you because of some genetic mutation. You don't know how long you were in the black site lab, what they really did to you, why they implanted a Nano-Hive or the last time you saw your son. When you escaped, you killed everyone you could reach but couldn't find him. You know they were looking for you, but you don't care - you're looking for them, too.

Recruitment Dialog[edit | edit source]
Bandit: So, we've put out the call to find a capable Agent EX. Who turned up?
Blur: I worked our network and the shadows delivered in ... unexpected ways. Our connect, Corp Splicer Dr. Knife, has a patient who she has been secretly helping get back on their feet... The story is this Agent EX escaped a corporate research lab.
Bandit: As in, they were the research experiment?
Blur: Evidently, yes. The Agent EX is semi-amnesiac and claims not to remember much but ... has the kind of skills we need and some unique qualities. A quick introduction -
Wera: My name is Wera - I'll be waiting for your call.
Dr. Knife: Let me introduce Wera. I've been helping her recover after she escaped a megacorporate prison.
Bandit: I'll cut through the hand-waving and trying to make it sound nice - I've heard you were a test subject in a Rook Tech black-site research lab.
Wera: You heard correctly. I appreciate not having to play word games trying to hide the truth. I still don't know the exact details, but something in my genetics - and my son's by inheritance caught a lot of unwanted attention from all the wrong people at Rook Technologies. I ... my head hurts thinking about it... I- no, we were kidnapped by our own. They made us disappear. I can't find record of my old life ... work history, citizen ID, when I was born
Bandit: But you escaped.
Wera: I don't know how or when. But when I did, I know I killed a lot of people ... I-
Dr. Knife: Wera ended up roaming the streets, hiding down here below the level. Honestly, she didn't know much of what she is telling you right now, we've only teased that out the last few months working together. But Wera has nowhere to go, not even a gray card. And Rook Tech is looking for her. We've had one close call already.
Blur: You come loaded up double with risk and trouble, then.
Wera: They're hunting me because of what they did to me because of what they put in me. I'm a risk but they ... made me ... Into an opportunity.
Blur: Dr. Knife did mention that you have an unidentified deltaware Nano-Hive, obviously something very special.
Wera: Rook Technologies thinks so. But if they want me back, they'll have to kill me. But I know if I don't find a crew - find a home - then they will catch me eventually. I'm vulnerable out here in the streets on my own.
Bandit: And your son?
Wera: I don't know ... I don't remember. I can't find anything about him, the records are wiped. But I know they still have him. His name was Ciaran, I can see his face. They still have him somewhere ...
Bandit: You owe Dr. Knife a lot for the recommendation, just to sit down and have this chance. Because we'd be taking a huge chance on you. What makes your worth the risk?
Make your choice and continue:
- I don't know if is the chem-treatments they gave me or just me, but I can push through all the pain - I'm Bull-Built. (+2 Strength and +30 Hit Points)
- Whatever Rook Tech's plan, they were eventually going to hook me to the matrix as a Hacker. The E-Therapy they put me on Fortified my Receptors against biofeedback. (+2 Matrix AP and +4 Cyberdeck Armor)
- Whatever chems they pumped me full of ... nothing distracts me or gets me agitated. I'm a Cold Killer with ice in my blood. (+1 Will and +5% Crit Chance)
Wera: I don't know if is the chem-treatments they gave me or just me, but I can push through all the pain - I'm Bull-Built. It doesn't hurt anymore or I just don't feel it - but I can take a lot of damage and keep going.
Bandit: I know none of it was your choice, but in our line of work, that can be the difference between a score and a disaster. What do you think, Blur?
Blur: I've got one more question what exactly are you hiding? Your memories are shot, I know but I can tell your hiding something from us.
Bandit: And before you answer, let me be clear -- if you want in this company, trust is our baseline. So, even if you don't like your own answer, it better be the truth.
Make your choice and continue:
- Even with Wera's help, I'm still struggling. I suffer from Flashbacks (Level 3 Wound, can be cured with time and money) from the lab and ... (-25% Stress Res, -3% ALL Accuracy and -2 Initiative)
- The Rook bastards fused an Adrenal Pump to my heart. Dr. Knife was able to deactivate so they can't use it to track me. So its useless deltaware ... maybe someday I can reactivate it safely.
- Before Dr. Knife took me in, a Brave Star unit tried to pick me up and I left a couple of them dead. So I've got another set of hunters out there.
Wera: Even with Dr. Knife's help, I'm still struggling. I suffer from Flashbacks (Level 3 Wound, can be cured with time and money) from the lab and ...
Dr. Knife: I've done everything I can but the damage is deep and I can't afford more treatment as it stands. If you take Wera on and then have the funding, there are treatment options. It would be expensive and time consuming, but you can get the immediate issue under- control. The amnesia, the long-term damage... to be honest, those are lifelong burdens now.
Bandit: Still, nothing a few heist paychecks couldn't solve if we decide to go forward.
