Recruitment Dialog[edit | edit source]

Friend: I first met <recruit> before I started with this crew. We got a job cracking into an old comms relay box outside of a nano-factory. I was the muscle, she was the tech.

Recruit: Our lying employer told us it wasn't going to be hard. We've learned a lot since those old days, eh, <friend>?

Friend: Good old times - simple jobs, simple problems. To start with, the box was 50 feet off the ground on a pole.

CK: You must have pulled it off, considering your both standing here today.

Friend: The two of us, you know we did. Turned out <recruit> is pretty good climber. Also turned out the factory security wasn't as dormant as we had been told.

Recruit: I had to rush because I could hear the gunfire down below. I didn't have the luxury to look down, as I was busy splicing in an endpoint. By the time I got down the pole, <friend> was backed into a bad spot, taking heavy fire.

Friend: <recruit> could have left me, could have split and collected twice the payment because her partner died on the job. But she didn't. <recruit> came in like a freight train, guns blazing. The security goons didn't know what hit them. Hell of a gunfighter, this one.

Recruit: I grew up in the Atlanta sprawl - outside their gleaming dome. Out there, I could hack to live but you can't live if you don't fight.

CK: So you can dive the matrix and you can stand your own in a fight? That's a rare combination.

Recruit: I grew up scrapping and fighting for everything I had - food, gear, somewhere to sleep. I don't back down from a fight.

Face: So why a mercenary crew? What are you looking to find?

Recruit: I came up the coast a few years back and ended up working with <friend> for a minute. I've been looking to find something bigger than just me, and I like the sound of what you've made here. A job, sure. A company, yeah. Family? Someone to watch your back.

Friend: Someone to come swinging down the comms pole, gun blazing to watch your back.

CK: So <friend> is vouching for you. Why don't you convince us yourself - what makes you worth the risk?

Make your choice and continue:

  • Growing up in Atlanta sprawl, I learned to shoot a gun before I learned to read. I'm a very Reliable Shot, you can count on it. (+1 Will, +2% Assault Rifle Accuracy (AR) and +3% Ballistic Dmg)
  • I grew up more than just fighting, I was killing to survive. I'm a Competitive Shooter, I have to find a little fight to feel alive. (+1 Will, +20 Hit Points, +5% Long Range Accuracy (Sniper/Railgun), -5% XP Gained and Unless you personally kill 1 enemy during a mission, chance of additional Stress at end of mission)
  • Most digital cowboys duck and run when things get hot. I'm not built like that - I'm Bull-Built. I don't run. I never have, and I never will. (+2 Strength and +40 Hit Points)

Recruit: Growing up in Atlanta sprawl, I learned to shoot a gun before I learned to read. I'm a very Reliable Shot, you can count on it. A gun always felt right in my hands. I shoot well and I never had an option, I learned to shoot to kill.

CK: You've got some serious swagger, but let me assure you, New Boston is just as nasty as Atlanta. That kind of big talk can get you killed, if you don't deliver on it. What do you think, <face>?

Face: I've got one more question for you. What chased you out of Atlanta? You didn't come up the coast just to see the world, did you?

Recruit: As I said, I made some enemies. I killed some people. But I covered my tracks when I got out. I've been up here in New Boston for years, and no one has come looking.

Face: I'm not sure that is reassuring. Tell us exactly why you left.

CK: And before you answer further, let me be clear - if you want in this company, trust is our baseline. So, even if you don't like your own answer, it better be the truth.

Make your choice and continue:

  • I did some work for a Netwraith to screw over an Atlanta Syndicate. The Netwraith helped me disappear and cover my tracks. To boot, she sells hot stolen Utility Programs you can't get anywhere else.
  • I screwed over a Syndicate in Atlanta and helped a premium Street Splicer escape their little chrome sweatshop. Now he owes me and is slinging Mil-Grade Matrixware illegally up here in New Boston.
  • I killed someone and stole their spot for a cybernetic surgery back in Atlanta. The dead man's Syndicate was looking for me, so I had to deactivate the FlashMem 1200MX cyberware, and I haven't been able to reactivate it yet.

Recruit: I screwed over a Syndicate in Atlanta and helped a premium Street Splicer escape their little chrome sweatshop. Now he owes me and is slinging Mil-Grade Matrixware illegally up here in New Boston.

CK: An experience splicer is a very useful friend to have ...

Face: But it may be a matter of time before the Syndicate finds you both.

Recruit: Saben Spaer and I were not careless. I covered our tracks. We faked Saben's death, convinced the Syndicate that they had actually killed him in the escape attempt. Now the part you're really going to love to hear is that Saben escaped with most of his bioprints the Syndicate was using - including Mil-Grade Matrixware.

Face: Even more valuable then. It sounds like you handled that very nicely, everything wrapped up so neatly.

Recruit: Only drawback is, Saben had to affiliate with the Street Splicer to get a spot here in New Boston. That isn't slowing down his off-the-record clinic, but he does have new bosses.

CK: A private word, <face>? What do you think?
