The team's Face — a former member of Los Zagales who has spent years building a new identity as a polished, connected NBZ operator, all while hiding exactly how she got out. Shimmer is a cool-eyed, attractive, lanky indigenous woman whose street-decorated wardrobe has increasingly given way to the kind of high-end fashion she associates with the corporate elite she was determined to join.
Shimmer's cyberware is built entirely around reading and influencing people. Her cybercoms carry encryption, jamming, recording, and boost functions that let her run tactical comms like a professional; her Tailored Pheromones let her chemically sway a target's mood at a critical moment; and replaced nerve tissue keeps her sharp under pressure. Her true gift, though, is unaugmented: a practiced talent for disguise, fast talk, and building out a personal network of informants that keeps her ahead of trouble.
Shimmer's escape from Los Zagales was bought, not earned outright — her half-sister, Tessa Jammer, an Arotech data broker, supplied the cutting-edge weapons intelligence that let Shimmer buy her freedom from the ward's warlord, a debt Tessa has never let her forget. Her old life still shadows her in more dangerous ways too: Neon Rick, the pimp who put her to work on the streets at eleven, has never accepted her escape as final and has hunted her ever since, cornering the team on a Ward 4 rooftop and gassing them during the hunt for Dr. Alan Goodman's shuttle. Zadd "The Judge" Black, a trusted Los Zagales lieutenant and one of Shimmer's former regular companions in her old life, helped broker her exit and remains an old, complicated tie to the gang she's trying to leave behind.
Shimmer's boldest performance to date was impersonating Kimberlin Dumonde's estranged lover, Maya Ajira, to lure Kimberlin into a public confrontation at a gala aboard the orbital yacht Daedalus' Mistress — a con that ended with Kimberlin's assassination and a running gunfight through the ship's service corridors. During the escape, Yossarian took Shimmer "hostage" as cover while the team fought to a stolen shuttle; separately, a rival cyberninja bodyguard genuinely tackled and grabbed Shimmer, then shielded her body with his own after being shot, dying to protect a woman he believed was an injured VIP. The guilt and trauma of watching him die for her has left Shimmer with lingering PTSD, and she later anonymously sent money to his family.
By the campaign's end, Shimmer had achieved something close to her stated ambition — to "rule NBZ from the glamorous shadows" — settling in as Camilla Dumonde's shadowbroker in practice and personal assistant on paper.
