The team's Hacker, and one of the New Boston Zone's most notorious — Ion is a famous name on the Matrix and an archrival of the CODEX hacker collective, though almost no one knows her real identity. She presents as a cool, pierced, tattooed 22-year-old with a punk aesthetic and a flippant, joking exterior that conceals a much harder interior.
Ion's Neural Interface with Data Storage lets her jack directly into the Matrix at speed-of-thought, and her deck — outfitted with Sift, Alert, and Identity Protection software — makes her one of the best in the business at extracting paydata from secured systems without leaving a trace. Her rivalry with CODEX began when she took their sloppy early hacking work and made it genuinely useful, a slight the collective has never forgiven; they treat any encounter with her as a priority hit.
Ion's drive comes from loss. Her father was executed during the collapse of Knight Horizon and its doomed corporate resistance, dropping her family out of corporate citizenship and into a much harder street life; her mother still lives that way today. A car accident and botched emergency surgery in her youth also left her with a lingering nano-radiation exposure that could one day kill her. Between the two, Ion has spent her adult life chasing the security and reputation her childhood took from her — sometimes by taking bigger risks than she should.
Shimmer recruited Ion to trace the shell company Nordic Financial Holdings after it surfaced in the investigation into Mr. Noro's kidnapping. Ion successfully cracked Nordic's old but formidable security, physically extracted its air-gapped server cores, and later remotely piloted a hijacked security drone to scout the Seven Dragons' warehouse vault from the safety of a hidden room. During the raid to free Camilla Dumonde from cryo-stasis, Ion jacked directly into the vault's hardline to open communications with Camilla and quietly accelerated her revival timeline to buy the team a critical window of surprise. She proved herself valuable enough that Yossarian's crew brought her on as a full, permanent member of the team — and, per later records, went on to work the Matrix on Camilla Dumonde's behalf after the fall of Gabriel Dumonde.
