Recruitment dialog[edit | edit source]

(This recruit is introduced by a friendly mercenary)

CK: We've put out the call for a new Warmachine. What did you find?

Face: I didn't have to look far we got a bite within our own team. <Friend> runs in some milsec circles and has heard about an impressive fighter who fits the bill.

Friend: Let me introduce <recruit>. I met <recruit> recently, through some of the ex-milsec channels I keep open. I haven't known her long, but I can vouch that she is deadly and has grit. And she is looking for a new crew.

CK: I have heard a bit about your prowess as a walking weapons platform, <recruit>.

Recruit: It takes a lot to get to this level, but it has cost me a great deal. I didn't know the cost when we accepted this life.

CK: We ...?

Recruit: My sister Tavia and I started this together. We were just street kids back then, looking for a hit, a chance to make a U-Duh. We were stupid enough and desperate enough - not to see the blade between the bills when a street doc offered us some free upgrades.

Friend: It's a common enough hustle below the level - most of the time they just rip your organs and toss you in a dumpster.

Recruit: Trust me, I'd spot it now before walking into the trap. Today, I'd be kicking the door down and torching the whole damn place. And killing every single person in the building ...

Face: All right, so it went badly? But you look like you've got most of your organs, so what happened?

Recruit: The doc wasn't an organ-harvesting front. Instead he was cybering up anyone they could to fight in underground death matches for a Syndicate called the Red Diamond. Tavia wasn't lucky, her body rejected the splice and it killed her. I learned about that later when they were getting me ready for my first fight. It did not go over well.

Friend: What <recruit> is trying to say is that if you're worried about a revenge quest against the Red Diamond, don't be. They're extinct.

Recruit: The doc had gotten a bit too excited, giving me an Ocular Lance he wasn't supposed to. I fried, and maimed and cut my way out of there. The street doc must have realized his mistake just in time. Dr. Allgood escaped and I still haven't found him. I spent the next year hunting down the rest of them. It helped me come to understand my Delta Wire.

CK: At least you don't have a whole Syndicate out looking for you

Recruit: It felt good at the time - it was what I needed to do.

CK: So you're back from your revenge and you're looking for a crew. What makes you worth picking up?

Recruit: ... I need to find something new. A new family, a new start, a reason to keep taking shots.

Make your choice and continue:

  • Tavia and I stayed alive by being quick and quiet - staying Agile helped me ambush Syndicate members one by one. (+1 Reaction, +0.2 Move Points and +5% Move Speed)
  • I started a street-rat, but I've become a Fearsome fighter. When I go after someone, I go in savage, right in their face. (+1 Will and +2% of Kinetic as extra Pure Dmg)
  • I will admit all this has ripped me up inside. I'm not sure if I work right anymore. I'm just a Cold Killer now. (+1 Will and +5% Crit Chance)

Recruit: I started a street-rat, but I've become a Fearsome fighter. When I go after someone, I go in savage, right in their face. Any way it goes, I've been spliced to the nines with cyber - there is no going back from a Delta Wire.

CK: In our line of work, that can be the difference between a score and a disaster. What do you think, <face>?

Face: I've got one more question - I know you wiped out the Red Diamond Syndicate but you didn't do it without making some enemies along the way. You killed a lot of people to get revenge for Tavia - but there is no way they were all clean kills.

CK: Then, let's hear it - if we're going to take you on, we need to know who your enemies are. And before you answer, let me be clear -- if you want in this company, trust is our baseline. So, even if you don't like your own answer, it better be the truth.

Make your choice and continue:

  • Dr. Allgood disappeared into the fold of the D-Cartel and I made a Syndicate Boss enemy there before I realized he was long gone.
  • I guess the Red Diamond was backed by a powerful Jupiter Corp VP.
  • After I escaped, I flailed around for a while. I made a mess Blue Ox territory and gave a Gang Boss a black eye they won't soon forget.

Recruit: I guess the Red Diamond was backed by a powerful Jupiter Corp VP.

Face: Sounds like you went barking up a dangerous tree and it did not take long to make some enemies. So the Jupiter Corporate VP was running a little side racket?

Recruit: When I went up against the Red Diamond I found out they were more into producing designer street drugs. Whatever they were into with Dr. Allgood was their own little secret. Not that Paige Gaunt is blameless. No, we have business, she and I.

CK: Then we will have trouble with the Corporate VP eventually. A private word, <face>? What do you think?

Face: Everyone in this business has something haunting their past. We've got to keep that in mind when weighing a new recruit.
