A Gunslinger and renowned sniper, formerly of Brave Star's elite Red SWAT unit, now working independently alongside Yossarian. Catalina — "Cat" — is a hard-eyed, scarred, muscular Hispanic/Latino woman who presents herself with the same discipline she brought to corporate security work, despite having been terminated from Brave Star "with cause."
Cat is heavily cybered for precision work. Her Neural Interface with Targeting Suite links directly to her weapons, sharpening her aim to inhuman precision and letting her selectively control the spread of automatic fire to avoid hitting bystanders. Her cybereyes carry thermographic vision, light amplification, magnification, and flare compensation, and subdermal plating protects her vital organs, along with a concealed firearm built into one cyberarm. She favors a stable of customized, linked weapons — most notably the Jaguar AT sniper rifle and a heavily modified Vanguard Assault shotgun — and rarely misses.
Cat's history with law enforcement runs deep. She spent her career moving up through New Horizon Security, Brave Star, and Matsumoto before going independent, and she still trusts — and is trusted by — her former partner, Detective Oscar Kova, who has repeatedly fed her inside information from Brave Star's files, including on the Irkmine Transport shooting and the investigation into Mr. Noro's kidnapping. Her fall from Brave Star came after she took matters into her own hands to protect one of Kova's family members from a pimp; she made the elite Red SWAT team before being drummed out for the violence of her intervention. She has at least one dangerous enemy left on the force in Captain Owen Solari, who would love to see her dead after she learned one of his personal indiscretions during a drunken night out.
Cat's cyberarm is a standing reminder of an earlier trauma: her original arm was destroyed when she and her pilot, Celeste Wakeman, deliberately rammed a Brave Star VTOL into an incoming rocket to save a group of hostages during a prisoner exchange. Wakeman was killed instantly; Cat survived, and Matsumoto sponsored her replacement arm and recovery, both to honor her skill and to keep her beholden to the corporation. Seeing Lupin's own arm suffer similar violence over the years has repeatedly dredged up flashbacks to that crash.
Above all, Cat is fiercely protective of her teammate Shae "Shimmer" Cole, whom she treats as the rookie of the group and has repeatedly put her own body between Shimmer and danger — including shielding her during the collapse of a Ward 4 building and pulling her out from under a dying bodyguard during the assassination of Kimberlin Dumonde. She has stated she would die for Shimmer without hesitation.
